Proculus Miller awakens on the Greystar Star Hab, above the planet of Acastus. The moons of Acastus, glyph carved as they are , shine their slickly white-green light on both the planet and the hab. The world below is a night world, lit by neon, drenched in rain, and struggling to bask in the light of its moons, used to calculate the time of day by their rise and fall in the absence of a system sun of any worth. The weak pulsar puts out enough light to power space based solar panels, but is worthless to anything on the surface. The wall terminal blinks once, with a short message waiting chime, and outside you can hear the bunk room doors of other new agents opening, as it looks like your recently graduated agent group is getting their first tasks. The air scrubbers work overtime from the adjoining room as one of your classmates must be sparking up an illegal smoke to calm their nerves.
Avatar
Proculus Miller 18-May-22 03:41 PM
Miller battles with the urge to skip his morning regimen of pushups and situps, ultimately talking himself into preserving what little energy he has after a night of poor sleep. He approaches the wall terminal and opens the message.
Avatar
Greetings Operative Miller. A mission has come to the operations room that fits the skill set you've tested the highest in during your end of training evaluations. Please report to Briefing Room A for a brief meeting before departure. Mission details, objectives, and final details will be shared with you then. This mission will take place out of Acastus space, and may be dangerous. You are permitted to travel with weapons and personal gear. The Confederation and all its agents are counting on you. The briefing will take place in one hour. Do not be late Director Kensh; Head, Greystar Confederation. The message is brief, as typical of the director and the head of the entire polity has been known to sit on on briefings for new agents. Someone constantly ingrained in the nuts and bolts of the work, the Director himself has a notable field career behind him as he turned in a combat suit for an actual one. The excitement in this wing of the Starhab is palpable as others are also getting their first assignments, and a new echelon of Greystar operations looks to be starting with all of you.
Avatar
Proculus Miller 18-May-22 11:54 PM
Miller instantly recognizes the Director and straightens up, even for a pre-recorded message. He hurries to pack his woven body armor, monoblade and other essentials and readies himself for the briefing. He sets eyes on Briefing Room A about half-hour early, remembering advice he overheard during one of his exams, that "if you're on time, you're late." He lingers nearby for a bit, doing his best to observe his surroundings without appearing nosy or over-eager.
Avatar
The door to the briefing room opens almost as soon as you get there, and you see the bearded form of Director Kensh sitting at the desk. He is wearing his dark suit as he always does in official addresses and you can see it is just the two of you in this room- and he has not bothered traveling with a bodyguard. "Good Second Rise to you Agent Miller. Please, have a seat, and we'll discuss your tasking. You'll be heading out of system, to another one of the worlds we administrate" he says, gesturing for you to close the door. The strong roast scent of Acastan Coffee is filling the room as the pot slowly percolates, distilling another fine batch of the smooth, local stimulant of choice.
Avatar
Proculus Miller 19-May-22 02:46 PM
Miller spots the Director and reaches back into his training to stave off any nerves brought about by his presence. He closes the door, greets Kensh appropriately, and adds that he is looking forward to starting his service to the confederation. He listens intently.
Avatar
"You're going to need some summer gear for where you're going" the Director says, passing a large folder to you across the table, indicating it is okay to break the seal on the side of the folder to look at the documents within. "Actually, I'm not sure about the climate, but how do you feel on being the first point of contact for a world very close to confederation space, that we have never visited. We're working on securing and making friendly all planets within an average spike drive distance of Acastus, and to the east, there is a system known as Polytie, which we have never visited, and have no information about. It might be a ball of nothing rock, it might be a civilized world with natives ready to work with us. It might be somewhere in between. Our accessors noticed you did well in negotiations, and in observation during training, and you seem like the kind of person we can trust with the job of spreading goodwill. Our protocols on this are pretty standard to what other polities are doing. Spend time with the locals, try to show them we can take care of them , solve a few local issues, and that's generally been enough to convince a planet that joining the union is a good idea. I see you've also got an interest in economics. As first contact, you'd be the one best suited to access the world for resources, and you never know what might happen. Might be in charge of a trade mission there later"

Proculus Miller 20-May-22 01:12 AM
Miller breaks the seal and begins leafing through the documents. "Yes sir. Let's bring them into the fold. What's our timeline on this?"
Avatar
"There is no timetable on bringing them in with a minimum amount of problems, but I do have a free merchant scheduled to depart this evening to bring you there. We don't know of any groups to our east, and any of the other polities would have to travel through Greystar space to get there, we're confident we can take our time on this. The last thing we need are more internal issues on a new world"
Avatar
Proculus Miller 21-May-22 03:26 PM
Miller racks his brain to think of any other questions he might have, but ultimately trusts that everything he needs is contained in the files. "Consider it done, sir."
Avatar
"You'll be the first person to see the system with physical eyes, and the first person to put books on the surface. The merchant ship bringing you there is in bay 3. Down two floors from here, and the crew is expecting you. I know you will not fail. "
Avatar
Proculus Miller 22-May-22 06:06 PM
(would i understand that to be my signal to head out, or would i wait for his dismissal?)
Avatar
(We can just move on if you didn't want to ask him anything or do anything else here)
Avatar
Proculus Miller 24-May-22 04:13 AM
(yep all set - Miller bows politely and heads out to bay 3 in search of the merchant ship. he stops himself from eagerly rifling through the documents on the elevator, knowing that it would likely breach protocol to expose sensitive content in the corridors)
Avatar
(sounds good! I will get you a system report together, and there will be three days of downtime as we fly from Acastus to our destination. I'll post our downtime rules in a second here)
14:51
Avatar
The ship departs Acastus quickly once you are aboard and the crew is polite and dutiful, though small. Two pilots and a communications officer make up the crew of the free merchant along with a single security officer. No cargo is currently loaded, the bay left open for any sort of discoveries you might make at the destination. Upon exiting spike space three days after leaving , you emerge in the western side of the Polytie system, and a quick scan of local space confirms your vessel is alone here in the deep black. A brief message on your wall monitor pages you to come to the bridge
Avatar
Proculus Miller 25-May-22 11:14 PM
(i think if there is any Confederation-endorsed or recommended reading that Miller could electronically access during the downtime, he would have spent it studying material related to diplomacy or anthropology, advice for building rapport with potentially hostile parties in a foreign environment etc. to train the Connect skill)
23:16
Miller is reading through the brief report on Polytie population and characteristics for what might be the hundredth time when the wall monitor pings. He hurries to the bridge.
Avatar
The bridge crew is looking at the system report now that scanners have come online, and everyone seems eager to begin the task at hand. Keeping the ship safe is a team effort and currently with the ship too far from the habitable planet to generate any kind of map, the captain does want to discuss contact procedures, it seems. After being thanked for attending the meeting, the small crew all clusters around the main planning table on the bridge, where an open exchange of ideas is about to take place.
15:19
There are risks to landing in the middle of a settled area when the mood of the population cannot be determined, but there are also issues with being caught sneaking around. It does not seem the locals have a way to contact space, or to hear anything broadcasted from your ship prior to landing.
Avatar
Proculus Miller 27-May-22 12:06 AM
Being a rookie, Miller waits for a pause before chiming in. "If we land in an unpopulated area, but are seen descending from the sky, the locals will eventually approach our position, likely in force. While landing in a populated area would represent a more aggressive approach, it gives us a chance to express peaceful intentions before the weapons come our way. I advocate for a rapid landing in an area with low-to-moderate structural evidence of population."
Avatar
(here is a map for you, if you wanted to select a village to land near)
Avatar
Proculus Miller 29-May-22 04:09 AM
Miller identifies an area consistent with his strategy, pointing to the buildings on the island in the lower-left of the map. "That should do."
Avatar
“Ah it looks like a village. We will land as close as makes sense to do so, prepare yourself for landing” The re entry takes close to twenty minutes as a shallow course is plotted and you can see the desert below slowly green up and a small city sits at the edge of the wooded area in the shadow of a snow covered mountain range. The city looks to be recovering from The Scream though you see little in the way of modern technology and almost no cars. A small party is gathering at the southern edge of the city due to the ship entry being noticed and it looks as though they’re making their way over to where your ship has set down and will be there in a few moments
Avatar
Proculus Miller 29-May-22 07:31 PM
Miller asks the captain if they have some sort of peace banner to display, such as a white flag.
Avatar
There is not a flag issued with what the ship is carrying, but the captain thinks sheets from one of the unused bunks might work for whatever you're planning, and gives you his permission to take them.
Avatar
Proculus Miller 31-May-22 08:14 PM
Miller distributes the sheets among a few of the crew and suggests that they be waived in the direction of the approaching party in the hopes that they'll understand the gesture of peace and steer aside, or at least delay, any violent notions. (edited)
Avatar
One of the oncoming fires a white flare in return, seemingly all they could come up with on short notice like this, and they begin to approach the ship keeping hands away from weapons. They still look wary, coming to within 100m of the ship- waiting for the invitation to come closer, or for someone to approach the group to speak with them.
Avatar
Proculus Miller 04-Jun-22 04:38 AM
Miller approaches with his hands palms up, bowing just slightly before returning to an upright position and saying to the foremost member of their party, "My name is Proculus Miller. I'm a member of Greystar Confederation on a mission of research and diplomacy." (speaking loud enough that they can hear, but not so loud as to sound like a command, in case they can't understand the language)
Avatar
The locals also seem to speak mandate common, and do understand you,. "Welcome to Polytie, You've come a long way, probably, maybe. We're not exactly sure where you came from. Things here have been difficult from The Scream and space is something we can't bother with right now. "
Avatar
Proculus Miller 05-Jun-22 09:31 PM
"I'm happy to tell you all about where we came from. An open exchange of knowledge would likely benefit us both. For now, I'm interested in learning more about how things have been difficult for your people as of late. Perhaps we can help."
Avatar
You get the sense he is turning over how much to say, looking apprehensive before taking the conversation down another track. "Shortages of almost everything. This planet looks good from space but the ground is rocky, the rocks don't have minerals, and the trees are soft. The second wave settled this planet a long time ago, great great great generations ago, and we think it was only because it has an atmosphere. There is almost no reason someone would live here without doing a lot to change the planet. Science takes a back seat when you can hardly produce what you need to keep living"
Avatar
Another ship begins landing, as you begin making overtures with the locals. Agent @Mona Shion emerges from their vessel, and begins making their way over as what looks to be a dispatched second half of the Greystar expedition makes planetfall here.
Avatar
(I think we can continue here Mona, almost been 24 hours )
Avatar
(Ok.) Mona greets the Greystar Team and invokes Passport of Hell to avoid making any cultural offenses in front of the locals. Mona does the culturally appropriate greeting for the locals. "Greetings. I am Diplomat Mona Shion from Greystar. It is a pleasure to finally meet your acquaintance."
Avatar
"Another one of you. They seem to be multiplying" the scout leader says, while his men laugh. "Your friend here has come and is trying to get us to join, but we aren't sure what Greystar can do for us. We've got problems, and we're not exactly looking for others to solve it for us, but we haven't been given any solid reasons to give up our independence. Right now, it sounds a lot like paying taxes or providing raw materials for other markets"
Avatar
(Tech level 3 with specialties. What are these specialties?)
19:11
(Anything medical or space flight wise?)
Avatar
"It is the opportunity to be a part of a greater group. You can improve your access to technology rapidly through these markets. As for these problems that need fixing, please, do not think of me as an other. We are share the same galaxy. Perhaps I can help."
19:23
(roll talk?)
Avatar
(We do not know, we have not been given that information from the locals, nor is it anything we can determine from a scan from space)
19:52
(no need to roll talk here, also not really sure what success would entail here)
19:52
"A few men and someone who talks well might not be of much help with some of the problems we're having. The world is a big place, and it's not just the animals here you need to worry about. The woods are a dangerous place for everyone, even us
Avatar
"I can do more than just talk well. What's in the woods?"
Avatar
'Bandits, hostile beasts brought here to help stabilize the eco system generations ago, worse than that in the hearts of the wood"
21:30
He looks out at the dark trees around you, weapons racked and ready.
Avatar
"Are there other settlements here? Are you in contact with them?"
21:35
(What TL are their weapons?)
Avatar
"We're not in contact with them, we used to be years ago, but now runners don't make it through the woods, and it's too dangerous to try to send someone. The charged atmosphere plays hell with radio too"
21:46
(TL 3)
Avatar
"Well. I'm gonna go do some looking around in other communities. You stay safe out here in the time being." Mona holds out her Mag Pistol (purchased in character creation) "Trade pistols?" (Can I head up to the castle icon in the north?) (edited)
Avatar
(each hex is about 200km, so we'd need to use the shuttle)
22:24
"Don't know how to use it. I'll stick with mine, I can rely on it, but thank you"
Avatar
"Sure thing. I never got your name by the way. Rude of me. I'll be back later. By the way, is there a bandit leader commanding these people or what?"
Avatar
(I typically don't name NPCS unless we see them more than once, but if we come back and he's around maybe we'll get something) "Not sure, anyone who'd be hanging out in the woods long enough to find out doesn't come back. Its why we stopped sending runners and mail to the other settlements"
Avatar
(Got it) "Alright, thank you. I'll be back in a few days or hours. We'll see. Pleasure meeting you." (Time to fly to the northern castle settlement.)
Avatar
(any preparations we want to make before getting there? )
Avatar
(1- see if this location has a sniper rifle I can barrow/trade for 2-Leave some people here to monitor the situation and make sure they aren't killed by bandits in the time being.)
Avatar
The ship armory has a sniper rifle that can be borrowed for the duration of the mission. Proculous and his expedition will stay in the area for now, and continue working their existing leads here in the region. None of the marines on your ship are permitted to do anything but keep the shuttle safe.
Avatar
OK, I'll borrow the sniper rifle and head north
Avatar
Landing 5km from the castle you can see cook fires and the signs of life here. Some trappings of modern life like broken satellite dishes and other communications blisters hang from the stonework, but otherwise it looks like life here is barely holding together from the ruins of the past. Thick forest surrounds the castle settlement,a and a small meadow at the edge of the wood is the closest place you are able to set down.
Avatar
Mona leaves the sniper rifle in the shuttle, making a point to not carry large weapons on first contact, and begins the walk to the castle.

You begin Walking through the woods and come to a large clearing after about twenty minutes. The sounds of lightly armored men approach from the trees, out of sight.

15:12
You're unable to see them from your present location, only hear them as they are not being cautious or quiet when walking through the forest.
Avatar
"Greetings" Mona shouts in the native language of the last place she was at
Avatar
(everyone speaks mandate common at least as one of the languages they know)
19:48
There is some shouting in the woods, and you hear the sounds of slugs being racked into weapons, as well as the clatter of armor as they begin fanning out. You can judge where they are by sound, not by sight given the thick brush of the wood.
Avatar
Mona raises her hands to try and show she isn't a threat.
Avatar
It seems as though you’re spotted and two of the six soldiers begin approaching , weapons held ready. They seem to think of you as an outsider or intruder based on your reception here but none have said anything yet.
Avatar
"Greetings. I come from the Greystar Confederacy."
Avatar
"Don't know anything about that, never seen something like you before either" the soldier who looks to have taken the lead of them, says. His weapon is still held low, waiting to see what else is said.
Avatar
(Is he a human or piggen?) "The galactic community has been rebuilding since the scream. And I've been sent here to give you an opportunity to join it, along with help rebuild the communication network of your planet."
Avatar
(this one is human)
19:54
"We didn't think anyone had survived out there. Can you provide any proof of where you come from? We will take you to see our leadership if you can"
Avatar
Mona presents a sector map and Greystar badge
20:09
"Plenty of people out there. All kinds."
Avatar
He takes a quick look at the pad and sees enough to satisfy his curiosity, but it sounds as though their leadership might be more difficult to convince. "You should come back with us, they're going to want to hear what you have to say. We can't really make these kinds of decisions ourselves" (edited)
Avatar
"Sure thing. Take me to your leader. I appreciate it."
Avatar
The group begins taking you into what could charitably called escort and realistically called custody. They haven’t asked you for any weapons you are carrying but they seem to be a no nonsense group of people trying to make a living here in the dangerous forests you’ve heard so much about. Distant caws and whooping of animals has your full attention. The team is tense and their weapons scan the surround vigilantly. One of the men has a badge that looks like a sunburst sewn onto the shoulder of his jacket. Your destination looks to be a substantial castle made of dark stone and overgrown with cultivated Ivy. A wooden palisade surrounds the castle and a small village built around it and the gate guards let you pass without comment since you are escorted.
Avatar
Mona takes in the scenery as she hovers alongside the locals. She was hoping for a more impressive infrastructure to make linking the groups easier. She hopes it isn't a monarchy.
Avatar
Your hopes are dashed as a figure with four guards comes from the castle to meet you on the small slope halfway between there and the town gate , and introduces themselves as King-Regent. The figure is male, and young, with the wrong side of smugness without charisma to pass it off as self assurance. It looks like they're at this meeting only after severe prodding by others, more intelligent advisors elsewhere perhaps, and without much fanfare the guards introduce you, and explain they found you wandering in the forest. Upon seeing you do indeed come from the stars and have knowledge of several galactic communities out there, they brought you in.
Avatar
"Thank you for having me, King."
Avatar
(Your job here is first contact so how the conversation goes is more or less on you. I know you posted talking points so feel free to roll into them )
Avatar
"I understand your community here has been cut off from the stars for some time now."
Avatar
(Was busy so I didn't write a full thing. Not trying to double post) "We do not always choose how the galactic community finds us. I'd say you're very lucky to have been found by the Greystar Confederacy. The galaxy is not always so accommodating. I'm surprised The Still Lady never came for you. The chimera ascendancy would be a worst case scenario. We're bringing you the opportunity to unite this planet, rebuild your infrastructure, and join something greater. To become pioneers of a new galactic frontier."
Avatar
“You have found us. Those names do not mean much to us here and all we have as proof of your words is you, but trust can be fostered and developed. What would Greystar do if in a formal relationship with our group?”
Avatar
(What is my authority here? What is standard in these situations for what Greystar does for newly connected communities?)

Avatar
(Ok great) "We can offer you protection, rebuild and improve infrastructure, show you the stars. We can do a lot for this planet."
Avatar
“And no doubt you’d want something in return for all that generosity. No act is made with true altruism in mind of course. “
Avatar
(What do we want? I was imagining military bases and staging ground for expansion. Probably natural resources as well?)

"Your planet will become a contributing member of the Confederation. With that comes some give an take. But you will be one of us. Not a simple satellite state to be exploited and forgotten. " (edited)
Avatar
"Perhaps there's an act of good faith you can do for us, to prove your willingness to stand behind your words. We're having some issues out in the wild, trying to get solar panels set up on some hills north of our castle. The engineering team has vanished, and we don't know what happened to them. With all your tools and technology, you should be able to figure things out pretty quickly"
Avatar
"Sure thing. We'll get that done for you." Mona heads back to the ship for her sniper rifle or sends word to have her sniper rifle brought to her. Then heads off to the hills. Not too thrilled about doing maintenence work.

Tracking through the woods, you do not get as lost as you think you might, and you do see metal guides on trees, and utility poles sunk into the ground meant to transmit power back to the main settlement here. You can see the cables have been cut in several places, the work done by something deliberate and sharp edged, likely not the claw or jaw of an animal.
Avatar

Mona looks for signs if the engineering team. And continues down the hill away from the settlement. Hoping she may find them further out.
Avatar
walking for another hour, the sun is about to set, and it is about this time that you see a cracked hard hat hanging from a tree branch about 20m in front of you.
Avatar
Mona steels herself and continues walking forward. Trying to remain unseen by whatever is out here.
Avatar
As you approach the helmet you can see blood splatter the side of the yellow safety device and one of the ear cans has been entirely torn away. There is blood on that as well. It looks like drag marks head west into the darker portion of the woods
Avatar
(Hell yes night vision mode)
07:35
Mona continues onward occasionally using the sniper scope as a telescope
Avatar
Darkness falls, and the scope provides little benefit in the tight confines of the forest. Following the drags, you find a shredded safety vest, and what looks to be a survival knife with blood on the blade. The blood is a dark hue, darker than what would come from a human, and appears not enough to have brought down whatever dragged the struggling workman off. Your trek takes you to something of a cave, worked into the side of a set of foothills, the entryway strewn with all manner of animal bones - most picked clean by whatever lies within, or the scavengers descending to pick up the secondary meal.

18:28
(I was thinking of waiting for it to come out of the cave to gather intel or use my garunteed execution attack to take it down. Mona cannot engage in cave combat. She has 3hp. With Noctua taking +2 damage from melee, if she is hit by any melee attack she will go down. And it doesn't look like this thing has been using a mag pistol. Is leaving and telling the kingdom about the cave fulfilling any part of the favor? Or am I expected to deal with this here and now. I guess it comes down to that.) (edited)
18:32
(Is there any sapient race that normally acts like and is capable of this? Looking at the damage it has done is it reasonable to believe Mona isn't dealing with the local equivalent of a bear or other animal?)
18:33
(I read up on all the player species but I'm just double checking.)
Avatar
(The only information known about the world is whats in the world anvil. If you're not seeing anything in there that's matching this, it is probably sometihng we have not discovered, not all that uncommon given the sheer variety of planets. if you are camping right outside its cave, your target needs to be in sight, and unaware of you for an entire minute to make an execution possible. Depending on where you're digging in you might not meet those conditions. They wanted to know what happened to their engineering crew. If you think you've satisfied the answer to this question, then we can return, if you don't think this has been handled to the level of your satisfaction, we can keep going. The decisions should be yours)

(Understood, thank you) Mona heads back, having a pretty good idea of what happened here.
